Exploring Bamboo

Semester-4 begins with a workshop on bamboo. Having Edgar Banasan from Philippines guiding us through the weeks to come.

Straight away from knowing about how bamboo grows to weaving ratan in ‘tuknoor’ style which will be discussed as we advance ahead.

These were Edgar’s tools, who has been a bamboo curator for more than 20 year and lately exploring structural and architectural projects(Facebook handle will be mentioned below).

Pumped up in collecting scissors from salons to start our exercise. Wondering why scissors? Well Edgar says that scissors make the best knives to cut bamboos. Imagine a knife of our own… handmade for ourselves . That’s what excited us too.

Here you go our knives which we still use.

  1. Separating scissors
  2. Filing them sharp with fine grit sandpaper
  3. Handled chiseled in wood making to the knife we wanted to craft bamboo.

Edgar teaching us to make ratan.

Making of Tuknoor with ratan. Tuknoor is a 5 pleated weave using ratan as shown in pictures above used as an embellishment to knives we made.

Slicing bamboo with our knives was very rewarding. Planned our days to make a knockdown furniture which was our assignment brief.

Small models to figure out what to do as below

The whole idea of making the furniture was to flat pack and roll the legs which we thought of weaving together

After sampling our ideation like the pictures above bending process started using blow torch

Bending and clamping was tedious yet fun. Used araldite- epoxy adhesive to stick the 2 layers together.

Filling and scraping to finish. Along side working around with legs to fit in . Thankfully the structure is standing enough for a Coffee Table- Light.

Which was done in this 4 week project . It feels great to work under such fine craftsman

Checkout our end product after the very process called soushudiban was discussed in the Windsor tour.
